I finished my sculpture of the character called Reaper! Here it is :) I've never made a sculpture before, so I'm quite proud

Storyboarding 4 life

Been working on my storyboard for my IP music video lately... It has all the major points, I need to fill in the fluff more.

IP begins...

I am making a animated music video for my Senior Design Project. I already have the story and my characters in my head, I am working on making them fleshed out.

And so, here goes my first ever sculpture! Hope it works out...

I haven't named this character yet. I am thinking about calling it "Reaper"

Monkey Casts

For class, I am making a project based around designer toys, and making it into an exploration for my senior project. The plan is to create a small primate family, complete with individual banana boxes. I want to explore 3-D works and metal working, so I will bronze/Aluminum cast one of the monkeys and his container. Here is a plastic print of the monkey to be cast.

The end is in sight!!

So, I need to put in writing what I have left to do for the end of the semester, for my own sanity.

Just this past weekend I had the show Deniz (Choreographed and directed by Susie Thiel) premiere, my projections in the background. I took pictures of the performance, but the dance department apparently does not liek peopel to take pictures at shows, due to copyright issues(?) so I'll keep them to myself.

Look! It's a bag!! and a mask?!

Playing catch-up again... Here is a bag I made for Wood is Good with Kaite Rubin. It is cherrywood, with bronze and copper hardware, and a clothesline strap. I need to get in the habit of WIP pictures again...

It has an indent on the back for perfectly fitting on my hip, and made to protect those oh so fragile little things I end up carrying to and from school. Overall, it took 3 weeks to do... 2 weeks of that was chiseling out the inside.

  This is a copper mask and collar piece. The prompt for the assignment was to create a piece that is a response to today's beauty standards. There are women who have been raised to be rather silent in their opinions, that emotion is a negative thing and should not be expressed. They are taught to go along with whatever else is going on, and to not "stir the pot" with their own opinions. 

    In response, I created this piece, as stating that a good women is silent and obedient. The collar part has a D-ring attached to it, a way to restrain, and the shape of the collar restrains the movement of the head. If the head slouches, or turns, the collar digs into the neck and collarbone. The jaw and mouth piece do not completely restrict speaking, but they do make the process of it very uncomfortable. The speaker mesh represents a filter of words.

Materials are copper and sterling silver, took 3 weeks to create. The back is fastened with a belt, and the speaker mesh is from an old boombox.

Deadlines were piling up on me, i just as of 2 hours ago, completed my last one for a while, so I have a few days to relax.

Wood Is Good: Kaleidoscope

A chiseled chunk of poplar. The kaleidoscope goes through the center and is handmade. Meant to be an object of calm and an alternative to nervous habits.

Sadly, my kaleidoscope has disappeared from the studio at school, and has shown no signs of returning.. I'm really disappointed as it was something I was really proud of. I'm trying not to let it get me down though, because I'm afraid I won't want to make anything for a while... it has been such a struggle to get my projects working lately. Accepting that I probably will never see the kaleidoscope again on top of the problems to make a project makes it seem useless. But, I know that making something is a process I love, and I should not let it be taken from me by someone stealing a project from me.

Metal Work

Upstream is a piece that is made as a response to entries in my own journal. My writings express the feeling of me being spread all over, losing grip on myself. I am torn between work, school, and my personal life, which all feel to have become more demanding this school year. In my journal, I have been questioning my ability to make it through this year. I created a sketch in it, of a fish swimming upstream, and afterwards, realized that is how I have felt since I have been enrolled in college, especially here in the busy and fast-paced art school.

Upstream was a great learning process. To complete this piece, I had to learn many new techniques. The body of the fish is hammer textured copper, the tail is chased copper, the chain is hand-made bronze wire, the rings are cast sterling silver, and the body parts are tumbled sterling silver. The long hours involved in learning for and creating this piece became an example for what it is trying to represent. During the time of its creation, I was spending days of 12 to 13 hours in studio, in an attempt to finish it in a week. This is what art school has become, and there are parts of me that enjoy it, while the rest of me needs a large break to catch my breath and pull myself together.

CFC City Project

We filled a sketchbook over a process of 5 days, with a prompt of 'Grassroots vs. Branded' culture. We then handed in our sketchbooks, and inside of them, our teacher wrote a sentence response to them. These responses were prompts for our next project. Pretty fun, if I do say so myself.

My prompt was to create a my ideal world, where I would like to be. So, I decided to make a lasercut rendition of a skyline, with lighting and a bit of metal work. Here is the progress so far...

I walked outside today and looked down my driveway. It looked like a forest, and you couldn't really see any signs of civilization. Perfect opportunity to test out my new camera!

The Time Traveler's Wife- Brooch Project

For a recent project I decided to create a physical metaphor for the book The Time Traveler's Wife. The finished project was a brooch, a practice in cold connecting with rivets.

The construction has 5 layers of metal, copper, bronze and steel, with a copper chain and two copper figures. The chain runs through the middle of the piece, and is partially visible through the clock face. The broken clock face represents time distortion and the time on the face is 12:24, the date of an important death in the story. The deer and bird represent the two main characters in the book, and as one is moved, the other is effected, even through time.
